The
Death Penalty
The Socratic
Method at its’ core has been about questioning the beliefs of people and looking
at why they support it, or don’t. The death
penalty does continue to be questioned within the United States and whether it
is morally right or wrong. Those who oppose the death penalty see it as an act
of revenge, not as an act of justice. But is there ever a time that the Death
Penalty does serve justice?
In the case of
the Kenneth Allen Mc Duff, his capital crime punishment served justice. He was
put on death row for the brutal murder of 3 teenagers he kidnapped and killed. The female member of the trio was sexually abused and
raped for hours before McDuff used a broomstick to snap her neck. It took six
years for law enforcement officers to persuade McDuff to reveal where he had
hidden the bodies of several of his victims which offered him no sort of
advantage. On November 17, 1998 he was finally executed for the heinous crimes
he committed
Was there ever a time in which the
Death Penalty did not serve justice? When sentenced to death the perpetrator is
given a choice on how they are to be killed, sometimes these methods don’t
always work. In the case of Joseph Wood, after he had received the lethal
injection, it took over two hours for the drug to finally take effect on his
body. In the case of William E. Vandiver, it took 5 volts of electricity and 17
minutes to kill him. But the worst cases of all are the ones in which a person
was put to death only to find out a month or 2 later that they were innocent
the entire time and were then punished in the most horrible way for no reason
at all.
In the end it’s just questioning
whether or not the situation is morally correct and whether or not it is cruel
and unusual punishment. And because there have been cases on both sides, there
will always be debate on whether or not this is the correct answer.
Jacqueline, you did a good job of presenting the validity of both sides to the death penalty debate and of highlighting the importance of critically engaging with those that are for and those that are against the death penalty.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your essay. I thought you did a great job of adding lots of factual information on both sides of the issue. You helped me really understand the pros and cons of the death penalty.
ReplyDeleteI can tell from your post that you did a lot research on this topic and you really showed the advantages and disadvantages of death penalty. And I agree with both of them due to different circumstances.
ReplyDeleteThe evidence you provided with your topic is great. It really makes people think is the death penalty the correct decision or not.
ReplyDeleteYour essay really made me think if I'm for the death penalty or not. It's such an interesting topic that I would like to learn more about and find out if there is an alternative to the death penalty. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteThis is very well structured. It makes me, as the reader, really question about your topic and whether it is just or not. We can only hope for an answer to come as soon as possible.
ReplyDeleteI believe in an eye for an eye. If someone kills someone they should also die. But the point you brought up about finding out the person is innocent 2 months later. That hit me hard. The justice system has a lot of flaws but when the government is killing innocent people. Thats when we know things need to change.
