Technicians

The article published by CNN mentioned that “….Whereas the short-term impact of AI depends on who controls it, the long-term impact depends on whether it can be controlled at all.” The quote makes me think of technicians, those people who control the AI. I cannot say all, but I would say many of those A.I. technicians are alienated either by themselves or by the society in some way.

People have certain stereotypes toward those technicians. For example, when I was a little, I’m an introverted child; I enjoy stay alone with my puzzles. Then some of my parents’ friends said I would be suitable to be a technician or writer. Because of the social expectation, more and more introverted people choose to study engineering, mathematics and many different types of sciences.

Let’s assume there is an intelligent student, who just graduate from an engineering college. Then he starts to build robots for living. He wants to make the best robots in the world. Why? Because he wants the world to see him. This is his own way of showing his values. He does not care what would the robot do in the future. What he cares most is he wants to be the one who changes the world. This example is just a personal assumption. I just want to make my point that one of the reason why some of those technicians are keep working hard regardless of AI threats might be this.

So I hope the society could pay more attention to those people who study and develop AI. There should not be any social stereotype toward any jobs.

  1. It is really interesting you brought the idea that people have stereotype toward people who develop the technologies. I think technician needs to be respect because they invent a lot of great things that make out life more convenience. Nowadays, people only cares what kind of advanced technology had been invented but they ignores those technician who spend a lot time and effort on it.

  2. What resonated with me was your statement of how A.I is a representation of the people who make it themselves. Never really thought of it that way... Since we all have a different manner of presenting our skill and art, I guess it could be said that A.I is a demonstration of theirs.

  3. I appreciate how you can read the alienation of technicians from a piece about threats posing by AIs, without being influenced by the opinion of the piece. I agree that it is very unfair that while the technicians are just expressing their personal value on the ALs and other advance technologies, people are judging their works while simultaneously enjoying the benefits.

  4. I understand that while A.I does expose human to potential danger, technicians are working hard to improve the society. However, I think that we should set a limit to technology. For example, human cloning is a debating question. Technology is a good thing, but it also can easily lose control.

  5. I found it is very interesting that you focus more on technicians than technology itself. Surely, technicians are given lots of tags and do not get as much respect as they need. They are alienated by the society not in a way that they do not want to interact with others but that people always create stereotypes for them.

  8. I really like that you shift our focus from AI to technicians. We used to blame that AI is now ruining our society but ignored those who spent lifetime to investigate and develop. We should become more open and understand that it's their way of expression and they do contribute a lot in our society.
