The Meaningful life

Phi is a weather report who is going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to report about the Groundhog Day. However, he is reliving February, 2, the Groundhog Day for a long time and repeating the same things every day. At first he is really depressed and try to do things that's going to hurt himself and even try to commit a suicide. However, after finding out that there are things that's waiting for him to do, he finally explain everything to Rita and he even sleep with her. He learns to accept the truth and become to do something that's meaningful. He learns to play piano, be friends with the strangers, and even give a hand to people who are in danger or who needs help. Each day he is learning something new and trying to make Rita happy. Finally, he finds his meaning of living on the world and also finds out the life he wants to live.

Compare Phil to the myth of Sisyphus, Sisyphus he has to roll a rock to the top of the hill and every time its on the top the rock is going to fall down again. He has to repeat this action for eternity. And in Groundhog Day, Phil is doing the similar thing but in a different way, they are both repeating the same thing but Sisyphus is doing for nothing but Phil is finding out new things every day and trying to change the situation to perfect and finally live out of February 2. And I think that time change Phil into a humanitarian person. At first he is really depressed but after finding out that this is what he's been given, he slowly accepted his life and decided to do something meaningful. He finds happiness through helping people and finally knows what makes him happy and also during this process he finds out who he is. And also people’s reaction gives him courage to move on.

I would recommend this film. After watching this film I have a feeling that we have to cherish the things that we're given and always think in a positive way instead of the negative way.

  1. Phil definitely has more options that Sisyphus does. However, before he realizes that he can changes himself and discover new things from this repetitive day, I think he imagines himself in the same state of Sisyphus if he knows the myth. As Sisyphus's rock rolls down from the hilltop, Phil wakes up to the same radio alarm.

  2. I agree with you that Sisyphus is different from Phill. Although Phil is depressed and waste of his time, then he start to realized that what he have done is meaningless and start to explore his meaning of life through trying different kind of things.

  3. I agree that their is a strong comparison between Phil and Sisyphus because both teach that it isn't the content of the day that is important but rather the way you see the day. I found this movie very entertaining and informative because it makes you reflect on your day and wonder if you are spending your time doing the best thing without approaching you in a direct manner. Overall an excellent film.

  4. I like the comparison between Phil and Sisyphus. Both Sisyphus and Phil know the outcomes of their behavior, but they still choose to do it. I think that is really difficult because many of us try our best to achieve something because we know we have a chance to success. However, Sisyphus knows his rock will fall down and Phil knows he will wake up again in the morning. That is the moment to truly think about happiness and freedom.
