Personal good and common good

There are no absolutely good or bad in this world. It is too extreme to talk about one things is really good or bad, because everything has two sides, one is good one is bad. People could only determine good or bad depended on that the whether advantage is bigger than disadvantage.

I believe there are two kinds of good, personal good and common good. Such as technologies as we mentioned in the class, although it makes our life more convenience, it causes certain human abilities becoming limited. Whether it is benefit to people’s life is depended on how people view it. If someone thinks it is benefit, then the disadvantage became less important because he or she only care about it makes life easier. If somebody valued the disadvantage more important to them, then the technology is bad. So whether one thing good or bad is depended on how a person think about it.

In this situation, the good is personal good. However, there are public good which people need to sacrifice something for it. For example, the security check in the airport which needs people sacrifice their privacy for their safety because the scan could see the whole body of a person. However, in order to make sure everyone’ s personal safety and public safety, people must accept the scan before they enter the building. Although people lost their personal privacy, they have their safety at this time. Therefore, in order to keep the common good, people need to sacrifice some individual things.

  1. I really like your point of personal good and common good. Whether an object is good or not is really depend on the counterpart of the object. Sometimes for one common good we need to sacrifice some of our own goods.

  2. The common good perspective has really intrigued me. The concept of sacrifice I hadn't put much thought into prior, but it is a valid new point. Also, your disadvantage and advantage examples are great! I kind of see it as a more straight forward perspective of what we can sometimes determine as "good".

  3. Your point on the existence of common good and personal good is very interesting. I think it can be used to make sense of independent actors who do bad things. I don't think that everyone is good or right in everything they do, but I think your point can be used to analyze an action in a more well rounded way.

  4. I like the ideas about the common good and individual good. When people ensure their individual good, it is good and nice for people to seek the common good. Nowadays, our earth is like a big village, people should focus more on common good, making everyone more connect to each other.

  5. I really like your idea about distinguishing the common good and personal good, and I believe that sometimes these two kinds of goodness are not compatible. Like what you have mentioned above,I think it is necessary for us to give up some of our personal good to achieve common good for the whole community.

  6. I like how you distinguish personal good and common good. I do believe that there are sacrifices in each area. To have safely in airports, like you said, we sacrifice some of our personal good but add to the common good. In opposition, however, we sacrifice some of the common good to be able to have some privacy and personal good.
