Goodness comes in a variety of forms. It can be that which benefits an individual or a group, and benefit one short or long term. Goodness can also be qualities within an individual- not necessarily an action, like kindness.
By helping others, individuals reveal, kind hearted, pure intentions. By wanting to help others, an individual has good within themselves. When I bring food for someone who is hungry, or comfort another student who is distraught, my motives are pure- I want to help, not improve my ethos or use this credibility to get that person to do as I wish.
Happiness is good too. Feeling free, light hearted, content- these feelings are pure and all being deserve them.
Happiness, positivity, kindness-these are all the pure feelings which are good. But can’t the impure be good too?
Anger can be good. Anger can protect us. I could be angry at my biological father for the trauma I suffered under him, but some say I am required to forgive him because we share DNA. But what about me? Isn’t the quality of a human life important too? He may have fathered me, but I have anger- deep-rooted, strong, cold and fearful anger towards him and I believe it is for the right purpose- it keeps me away from him. My anger protects me, keeping me away from thoughts or feelings of him that could trigger a PTS episode, shutting down my emotions and immune system for over a week. The anger may not be the right way. The anger takes energy, which tires me but sometimes i direct the anger into something beautiful: art. Music, theatre, writing, drawing, painting; in all these ways I can create and share my experience, and if not for my anger, I would not have discovered them.
I really like how you looked more into the topic of anger. Anger and goodness have a tendency to be viewed as opposites, when they are truly not. When I get angry, people always tell me that my anger is negative, bad and that I need to be more positive. But to deny a biological factor of human nature seems pointless. So I guess channeling it in the right way is how we express goodness through anger.
ReplyDeleteI also really like how you looked at the silver lining of anger in goodness. I think that it is very important to channel every emotion into art, especially those which are considered "bad" because art can help provide closure and bring peace to the soul. Although you may not feel exactly "good" afterwards, you have still in a way beat the depressing and bad feelings and turned them into something productive and beautiful.
