“There is no higher religion that human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed.” When I ponder over the question, “what is good”, I find myself suddenly reflecting on the ongoing news about ISIS’s violent actions in Paris, which is totally opposite to the goodness and reflects the evil. They brought Paris a big tragedy and violated the highest creed that is mentioned in the quote. They are inhumane, violating the quality of being humans. Thus, goodness is anything that is opposite to and against the evil, and achieve common good. For me, the term “goodness” also refers to good quality.
Novak Djokovic, one of the best contemporary tennis players, a philanthropist, my hero, is the typical figure to present goodness, who has good quality, seek common good and resists the threats from violence. Since he was very young, he has showed the talents of being a good tennis player. However, because of the civil war within his country, he started his escaped life, but never gave up his dream of being a good tennis player. He grew up in a bad condition, but his persistence and assiduousness leaded to his final success. After he became well-known, he was invited by many countries to join their nationalities, but he refused and persisted that he would win the glory for his country and thrive the country after the severe civil war. He never loses his way in this materialistic world, when he got a tons of endorsement opportunities from different advertisement companies. He established Novak Djokovic Foundation, developed early childhood education projects in Serbia and gave grants to educational initiatives with a goal to help children. He even donated all the money he got from his wedding photos to the poor all over the world. Therefore, Djokovic’s focus on common good and his choice of bringing his country glory.
In conclusion, goodness is an ideal concept. Its meaning is different for everyone. However, the main idea of goodness is good quality, contributing to the society and being against evilness.
I really like your connection to Novak Djokovic. His pursuit to common good makes me think about our current lives! Goodness is against evil and achieve common good. It make me think about the balance between individual good and common good.
ReplyDeleteIts really cool how you chose one person to define goodness. I have never been able to find this type of person who I unconditionally look up to. It seems as if the way he lives really sums up your idea of what it is to be good, however, are there aspects of his personality that you don't consider to be good? Can anyone be completely good?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you point that people need to share some goodness with others when they have the ability to support other in the as situation as them. I believe there are a lot of people who believe in common good and willing to share their goodness with other. However, if people do not have ability to contribute to society, are they still good?
ReplyDeleteI really love your point about that people all have different understandings for goodness, and I like that you use different examples to analyze your idea. Goodness is an idea concept but through your example I can see that people are striving and longing for creating goodness for the whole society.
