Competition
Competition
is ethical. Winner will be rewarded, this is always the same but sometimes it
can drive competitors to unethical behaviour. Nowadays, competition is everywhere.
However, there are two different ways to explain competition. One definition of
competition is that how well an athlete can show of himself and become the one
of the best. Another definition is that how hard an athlete have been work to
compete with other athletes and become the best. The two definition give you a
really different view. Some people say that “it's not the winning but the
taking part that counts”. Behind winning the medal there are always a lot of
touching stories and lots of hard work. Trying and failing is more admirable
than even not trying at all.
To me
competition is good. Competition against someone else can make you push yourselves
to another level and make improvement because we all long for reward and
recognize. Competition is a time when we can show off ourselves and also the
time to show what we’ve down all over the time. I think people’s mentality
during the competition have to me really positive. And mentally they have to be
really strong because many things can beat them, such us the use of drug.
Celebrating achieving is acceptable but a lot of time athletes forget what they
should do and winning became their stumbling block of going forward and lead
them to failure. Through competition, people will also learn a lesson of always
have positive attitude, be strong, and control themselves from all the temptations
that are harmful to them. Competition is just one of the steps that we have to
go through to be able to succeed.
I like how you state that competition can show people's self expression, but that it can blind the competitors to such a point that they are unable to see their own success. I also agree that competition can result in perseverance and strength, but I disagree that competition causes people to avoid harmful substances. With competition, there will be both winners and losers. If someone continually loses, they will begin to feel like they are a failure. I believe that when someone feels like a failure, they will try to escape through risky behavior such as abuse of drugs and alcohol.
ReplyDeleteI really like your last sentence! Competition is not avoidable in the present society and when confronted, a positive attitude should be taken just as what you say in this post. Means of unethical competition do exist but the nature of competition itself is good, I believe. Those who argue competition is bad are simply showing a lack of confidence and acceptance, as people who work hard and are true to themselves enjoy competition, within which they can see the ground for improvements, and they are not afraid to lose.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a very interesting topic and I really like the view you took on it. More and more, I think parents believe that they should nurture their kids and shield them from any competition. (This is evident through the "every child gets a trophy" mindset that is very prevalent nowadays). However, without any competition I don't think anything would get done. Competition is a part of human nature and deeming it as unethical is oppressing a part of humanity. I really likes how you did make the point about in the spirt of competition, things can get a bit shady and unethical. But, in the long run, it's not the practice of competition that's unethical, but what can go on within it.
ReplyDeleteMerryta, I agree that competition can be a powerful vehicle for bring out the best in those competing - whether it be athletes, organizations or economies. However, just saying it is part of human nature isn't likely to prevent those from behaving unethically in a competitive arena, e.g. doping in sports, insider trading, etc. What do you think is needed to ensure that competition can help elevate an individual or institution to the highest level while also maintain that those competitors are engaged with the highest ethical standards?
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting topic. I agree that healthy competition can be very good for someone but that sometimes people go to drugs in a negative effort to compete better. I think competition is good and that having the effort someone put into something rewarded can be very powerful for that person.
ReplyDeleteI like how you see competition in two different perspectives, and at the end gave reasons to your opinion. Competition is a double edged sword, it can motivate people to go beyond their abilities, but other times people focus too much on the result use competition as a means to fulfill their ego. Maybe you should also include competition in other areas, instead of just sports. There are many invisible competition in society too.
